600 Desks need a new home! Free to good causes.

SurplusRescue1Thanks to Surplus Rescue CIC, hundreds of desks (and pedestals, chairs, filing cabinets etc…..) are looking for a new home – and they will come free for charities and good causes!

Surplus Rescue CIC, Winner of The Herald’s Green Business of The Year Award 2014 and run by Shelly Monk, is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company, set up to rescue second-hand items from usable waste streams: from construction projects which otherwise send to landfill, to office furniture and commercial clearances. These items are offered for sale to start-ups, growing businesses, third sector and other organisations across Plymouth and the South West.

SurplusRescue2_desksAs part of a contract with Plymouth City Council, Surplus Rescue collected 200 desks and drawer pedestal units in July and have a further 400 arriving over the summer. Example prices are:  Ergonomic and straight desks from £35, pedestal units from £15, office chairs from £20 each, along with various steel cupboards and filing cabinets etc.

Do you know of any charities that would like to have these donated to them? Alternatively social enterprises can receive further discounts on the above prices too.  Surplus Rescue are also happy to do great deals on bulk purchases too for businesses and schools etc.

Surplus Rescue was initially set up as a service for the construction industry to assist them with the reduction of clean, usable waste from construction projects which are otherwise sent to landfill.  These goods and materials are then matched against charities wish lists held by Surplus Rescue and offered for free to charitable, social enterprise and community projects. If there’s no match for any rescued items, they are then offered for sale at bargain prices to small start up organisations and individuals to help them keep their initial start up costs as low as possible.

Case Study – Neal’s Yard Remedies

As part of this, they support humane societies and scientific research bodies in the UK and US, as well as promoting various campaigns.

Case Study – Skipton Building Society

 

Skipton_GrassrootsWebSkipton Building Society is working with Project Dirt to develop its Grassroots Giving Cluster to connect and support community & voluntary groups by planting firm roots for future success.

Skipton have provided a helping hand to a wide range of community and voluntary groups from sporting clubs such as Molesey Boat Club (their funding provided support for Molesey’s athletes in their training towards the London 2012 Olympics) to looking for singers to join a new Choral Society! In the south west in 2013, they supported a wide range of projects including 2nd Dursely Rainbow Brownies, Gloucester City Ladies FC, Watchet Conservation Society, Boscombe Community Interest Company, Bus2Go and Lady Modiford’s School. In fact they have just completed a survey on what they did in 2013 that revealed what a success Grassroots Giving has been:

  • 90% of groups believed it will help them to continue with their work in the future
  • 73% reported that the programme has helped them to reach more people
  • 70% of respondents gained more press coverage as a result of the campaign
  • 66% of the winning groups were not on social media before but have now joined it to help them further promote their groups
  • 100% would recommend GrG to other community groups

Skipton Building Society continues to help smaller groups, clubs and organisations to have the biggest voice in their communities by teaming up with Project Dirt, a social network set up specifically to help community and voluntary groups from around the UK get better connected with one-another and their own communities. The Grassroots Giving ‘cluster’ on Project Dirt acts as a ‘hub’ for all Grassroots Giving followers connecting Grassroots Giving winners and past/future applicants from around the country, allowing them to promote their events, knowledge share, recruit and manage volunteers, share best practice and gain access to more funding and learning resources.

Being part of the Grassroots Giving Project Dirt community will allow groups to engage with a wider network of people local to them and better raise awareness of all the great work they do in their local area. And of course, this is providing the Building Society with many opportunities to promote their support to their existing and prospective customers too!
